How To Dial Up Great Guitar Sounds Using Your MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay Pedal
Most guitarists shy away from overly technical gear. Accordingly, the ordinary guitarist gravitates towards easy pedals. Pedal makers know they require to do more with less. Nevertheless, many find that three knobs are even too many. The only technique to get beyond these concerns is to spend some time learning what the controls on your guitar pedal do. Let’s jump right in and use the MXR Carbon Copy analog delay as an example of how to tweak those knobs on your guitar stompboxes.
Insert the Carbon Copy into your signal chain.
The typical signal chain would start with the guitar plugging into the Carbon Copy. Then connect the Output jack of the Carbon Copy straight to the Input of your guitar amp.
Unless it is your sole pedal, you’ll need to figure out where in your signal chain to put the Carbon Copy. Most guitarists put delay pedals at the end of their signal chain.
Understanding what each control does.
Delay:
The Delay knob allows you to modify the amount of delay time from 20ms (fully counter-clockwise) to 600ms (fully clockwise).
Regen:
The Regen knob allows you to modify the amount of delay repeats from one (fully counter-clockwise) to infinite (fully clockwise). This knob functions with the Delay knob, changing the amount of Delay changes the amount of Regen.
Mix:
The Mix knob allows you to change the portion of delayed, or “wet”, signal from fully dry (fully counter-clockwise) to uniform amounts of wet and dry (fully clockwise).
Mod:
The Modulation button allows you to impart a certain portion of modulation to the delayed guitar signal. Modulation is an effect that varies the pitch of a signal by a minor, regularly occurring amount, making a warbling effect.
There are two internal trim pots that permit you to change the width and rate controls of the modulation effect.
Effect on/off switch:
Like most guitar stompboxes, the MXR Carbon Copy has a foot-switch that toggles on and off.
Some Suggestions:
Start with the Delay and Mix knobs set fully clockwise and the Regen knob place complete counter-clockwise. Turn the pedal on by stepping on the footswitch. A blue LED lights when the effect is engaged. Now all you need to do is dial in your desired sound by adjusting the three knobs in relative to each other.
Whatever your system to using guitar stompboxes is, don’t be afraid to just twirl the knobs on your Carbon Copy to find what happens. Experimentation can deliver amazing outcomes.
