Tech Revealed – SDSL Vs Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line – The Main Differences
ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line is part of the digital subscriber line technologies.This allows for high speed communications over copper telephone cables, rather than the old dial up modems. Having become more common in 2003, most households had swapped to ADSL by 2003. A micro filter must be attached to each telephone point in order to split the frequencies that a telephone and ADSL operate on. For the hardcore connectivity fan, there is always the internet leased line.
As ADSL is asymmetrical, the download speed is greater than the upload the speed. Many service providers are now starting to offer up to 24mb and just about all offer up to 8mb of service. Although unless you live on the doorstep of the exchange, you won’t get the full speeds advertised. The speed is based not only on the distance from the exchange, but also the noise on the line (attenuation) and signal to noise ratio. The upload speed on these services tends to be around 700kb up. This is fine if you don’t need to send large emails or upload files to a website, which is fine for a normal home user.
If you are using your connection for large file transfers, or work, you might want to look at an SDSL broadband connection. These are normally business class connections and so get a much better support service and reliability. Don’t be surprised however if the prices are quite a bit more.
For most users, and mostly because of the cost, SDSL can be a little over kill. But the upload speeds are getting faster for standard ADSL broadband in the UK. For example, ADSL 2+ ITU G.992.5 Annex M, can allow upload speeds of up to 3mbit/s. For those living in remote areas in the UK, it’s a waiting game for new services to be offered.
SDSL lets you download and upload at the same speed. Not all exchanges are SDSL enabled so you would need to check or ask your DSL service provider to find out for you. You will normally have the choice of either 512, 1mb or 2mb, upload and download speeds. SDSL operates on the same range of frequencies that the POTS telephone service operates on, and so cannot be used with a standard telephone service, even with a microfilter splitter fitted. SDSL can be used depending on the noise and date rate on your line.
SDSL or Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line means that you get the same speed both up the line as well as down. Not every exchange is SDSL enabled, so check with your provider first. You will normally have the choice of either 512, 1mb or 2mb, upload and download speeds. Operating on the same frequencies as the POTS telephone service, you cannot run SDSL on a standard telephone line. Depending on the noise and data rate on the line dicates the distance at which SDSL can be used.
